NIGHT OF AD-EATERS. “A LA CINEMA”

35 years ago Jean-Marie Boursicot presented his brainchild for the first time to the world: the Night of Ad-Eaters. For him it was simply a step towards friends with whom he wanted to share the pleasure of contemplating his own collection of advertising clips. After all, these are not like badges or stamps which have a place in an album and which one can show to any interested party at any moment.

In those days the situation with advertising clips was quite different. Boursicot had to organize a big event, and form a program of screenings, find a cinema, deliver the films… the first such display took place in Paris at the cinema “Grand Rex”.

Just think! Boursicot was the first person in history to suggest watching advertising clips as entertainment, rather than in their “immediate function”. It is difficult to comprehend today, but in those days you could only see an advertising clip during an advertising break on TV or before a cinema screening. If we send each other continually amusing clips by e-mail, or send links on YouTube today, then 35 years ago, of course, that was not possible. And Boursicot became the author of this simple idea: the advertising clip as a work of art; to be precise, a work of film art. Therefore the Night of Ad-Eaters has for many years been a partner of Kinotavr. And, quite pleasantly, we have reason to mark this year a small anniversary: the first session of Night of Ad-Eaters at Kinotavr took place five years ago!

This year, the Night of Ad-Eaters holds in store a special surprise for the festival visitors. The program is called “A la cinema”. Of course, this is not accidental. Jean-Marie Boursicot has picked clips which demonstrate why Boursicot has, so many years ago, grown fond of advertising. He says: “For an advertising clip to interest me, it must have a story!” How close this is to everyone who makes films for the silver screen today! In fact, everyone knows that for a successful film you need three things: a good script, a good script and … a good script.

At last all those who are waiting for interesting stories on the big screen can take pleasure in 100 tremendous scripts. The show “A la cinema” from the Night of Ad-Eaters will show us over 80 minutes which stories lie at the heart of advertising – that kind of advertising which we’re all fed up with and from which we expect nothing curious, when an advertising break interrupts our television programs. But Jean-Marie Boursicot, having collected the greatest advertising clips in the world, returns us with their help to the land of cinema – which we love so much for its magic.

The program contains fascinating stories told by insurance companies, banks, design companies, drink manufacturers, carmakers and even producers of contraceptives. When you look at such ads, you forget that the purpose of any clip is to sell. The Night of Ad-Eaters foregrounds something absolutely different. Each advertising clip “shouts” about something else; we literally hear: “Look how interesting this can be presented! Do you recognize yourself? Are you ready to take the risk? You can do it! Isn’t it funny?” Every spectator will find an answer to all these questions and challenges; of course, we would like to see more such stories, such acting, directing, computer graphics, and hear such soundtracks…

Like 35 years ago, Jean-Marie Boursicot invites us to forget about the attempts of advertising to sell us something and look at it in another way!

The best way is to come to the Night of Ad-Eaters!

Some statistics:

Number of advertising clips in the show “A la cinema” – 100
Number of producing countries – 40
Duration of the show – 80 minutes
Longest clip – 6 minutes
Shortest clip – 1 second
